This independent report is produced without sponsorship from any organisation. The objective of the Bursa Top 20 is to promote philanthropy and encourage charitable giving among for-profit organisations.
In a rapidly evolving global economic landscape, corporate philanthropy has become an integral facet of modern business. Against this backdrop, ‘Bursa Top 20: Who’s The Most Charitable?’ offers a compelling glimpse into the world of corporate giving by the 20 highest-earning companies listed on Malaysia’s stock exchange in 2023.
As we navigate the complexities of the contemporary business environment, this initiative serves as a unique endeavour to unravel the trends and practices of corporate philanthropy. By delving into the sustainability and annual reports of these corporations, we embark on a data-driven journey to gain fresh insights into the extent of corporate generosity in Malaysia.
This evidence-based reporting not only sets a new benchmark but also paints an aspirational vision for other companies to emulate or surpass in their charitable efforts. Through both monetary contributions and in-kind support, these Top 20 Bursa companies have demonstrated a profound commitment to corporate social and environmental responsibility, extending their impact to employees, communities, and societies at large.
The purpose of this report is to help
The reports revealed a lack of uniformity in reporting, with varying measures of materiality and inconsistent definitions of giving (e.g., in-kind donations vs. cash). This made it difficult to compare the level of giving across companies. However, these challenges highlight the need for a standardised giving framework and more transparent reporting.
TIMEdotCom, YTL Power International, CelcomDigi and Gamuda newly entered the top 20 earners in Bursa Malaysia for FY2023/24.
TNB contributed RM99 million equivalent to a cash-to-profit giving ratio of 3.57%.
Gamuda contributed RM82.89 million in in-kind giving, which is 4.51% of the company’s net profit.
Out of 20 companies analysed, 14 companies reported a cash-to-profit ratio of less than 1% in 2023.
Collectively, the top 20 Bursa companies donated RM381.81 million in cash in 2023.
Only 8 companies incorporated the Bursa ESG Reporting Performance Data Table Template into their 2023 annual reports.
The total employee volunteer hours reported by all 8 companies was 446,107 hours.
38.3% of all giving by these 20 companies was focused on Education.
The Youth benefited from 35.4% of all giving by these 20 companies.
Collectively, the top 20 Bursa companies donated RM381.81 million in cash in 2023. This marks a significant increase from the previous year’s total of RM129.25 million, showcasing a notable improvement in corporate philanthropy and reporting transparency. The average cash-giving-to-net-profit ratio for these companies stands at 0.82%, reflecting an upward trend from the previous year’s percentage.
However, two companies; Hong Leong Bank Berhad and Hong Leong Financial Group Berhad did not specify the monetary value of their cash donations, highlighting potential areas for improvement in their philanthropic reporting.
Beyond cash donations, companies also made in-kind contributions through CSR programmes, food, products, and services to support various causes or beneficiaries. While some companies clearly stated the monetary value of their in-kind contributions, others did not. As a result, many companies reported their total community investment as part of their cash giving, without separately defining the value of in-kind contributions due to a lack of detailed data.
Aside from Gamuda Berhad, the other company that reported an in-kind contribution was Petronas Gas contributing RM50,000 which is 0.003% of the company’s net profit.
Corporate social responsibility is increasingly championed from within, as employees volunteer their time and expertise to support NGOs and grassroots initiatives, demonstrating the growing role of corporate professionals in driving social change.
The top 20 companies in Malaysia prioritize Education as the primary focus of their charitable giving, accounting for 38.3% of their contributions. The Environment comes in second at 17.2%, followed by Welfare at 11.5%, while Sports receives the lowest share at 0.5%.
Contributions to the Education category encompass a wide range of initiatives, including promoting education, raising awareness of various societal issues, offering training and upskilling opportunities, and providing sponsorship for educational facilities, materials, and other empowering educational endeavours. Notable educational initiatives by these companies include the iTEKAD programme, Financial Industry Collective Outreach (FINCO), Reach Independence & Sustainable Entrepreneurship (R.I.S.E Programme) by Malayan Banking Berhad, and TM Future Skills by Telekom Malaysia.
Youth emerge as the leading recipients of these charitable contributions, accounting for 35.4%, followed by Community at 32.2%. The Environment ranks as the next significant beneficiary with 13.9% of the contributions, while the Elderly receives the smallest share at just 0.5%.
Among the prominent organizations and initiatives that have benefited from the support of the top 20 Bursa companies are the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM), Institut Jantung Negara (IJN), Komuniti Tukang Jahit (KTJ), Green Growth Asia Foundation, Malaysian Relief Agency Foundation, and Kechara Soup Kitchen.

This year marks the third edition of the “Bursa Top 20: Who’s the Most Charitable?” analysis. We’ve created a comparison table to showcase how these companies have performed over the past three years, highlighting their progress and commitment to charitable giving. Our hope is that this analysis will inspire these companies to continue enhancing their contributions, fostering a stronger culture of corporate social responsibility.
Overall, Cash Giving to Profit (%) increased for most of the companies analysed in 2023/24. This improvement is partly due to increased transparency in reporting, as more companies disclosed their contributions this year. The rise in transparency is attributed to the introduction of the Performance Data Table template by the Bursa Malaysia ESG Reporting Platform, which encourages publicly listed companies to report their giving more comprehensively.
