MISC Berhad is a world leading provider of international energy-related maritime solutions and services. The Group’s principal businesses comprise energy shipping and its related activities, owning and operating offshore floating solutions, marine repair and conversion, engineering and construction works, integrated marine services, port management and maritime services, as well as maritime education and training.

The net profit of MISC Berhad increased in FY2023 to RM2.12 billion from RM1.82 billion during the previous financial year.

The year on year net profit growth at MISC Berhad increased by 16.49%.

The Group declared a higher dividend payout of RM1.60 billion for FY2023 which is a dividend payout ratio of over 80% or 36 sen per share

The Group did not specify the total amount of contribution made towards Zakat during FY2023.

Total cash contributions made by MISC during FY2023, was RM29.60 million which is equivalent to 1.39% of their cash giving to profit ratio. This contribution was made through community investment impacting over 829 beneficiaries.

Total in-kind contributions are not defined due to incomplete data. However, contributions are still accounted for under the RM29.60 million contribution made through community investment.

The total employee volunteer hours reported by MISC Berhad were not detailed in their annual and sustainability report in FY2023.

Since 2023, 36 coral reef sites have been surveyed, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of reef health in the Mersing Islands. Additionally, three coral rehabilitation sites have been established, and 21 mooring buoys have been installed since 2020 to promote sustainable tourism. The programme has achieved a 77% sea turtle nest hatching success rate in 2023, surpassing the 75% target, and has conserved an annual average of 1,916 sea turtle nests since 2020. Other significant efforts include completing two recycling programmes at the Mersing Islands and establishing a recycling corner at Chagar Hutang. Since 2020, 10,011 kg of trash has been collected from both land and underwater. Furthermore, the programme has engaged over 1,800 individuals through awareness programmes and training on marine resource management and tourism-based supplementary livelihoods. It has also significantly improved the facilities at the Research Station at Chagar Hutang and fostered the participation of 247 employees in the Employee Participation Programme since 2021.
2MERSING ISLANDS REEF CONSERVATION N/AReef conservation activitiesN/AMarine lifeThe Mersing Islands Reef Conservation Initiative, part of the HOTO Programme, is a five-year collaboration with their partner, Reef Check Malaysia (RCM), focusing on two key areas: Coral Reef Conservation and Management, and Plastic Waste Management. This initiative aims to improve ocean health by supporting coral reef conservation, enhancing reef resilience, and reducing plastic litter in the ocean. Our efforts on the Mersing Islands involve a multi-level collaboration with various stakeholders, including local communities, tourism operators, academicians, local government, the Department of Fisheries, and local businesses. MISC has committed to contributing RM250,000 annually to this initiative for five years (2021–2025), demonstrating their long-term dedication to ocean conservation.
3Employee Participation Programme (EPP)N/AEnvironmental awarenessN/A13 familiesThrough the HOTO Programme, MISC incorporated employee participation and volunteerism to enhance their employees' environmental awareness while also providing opportunities for employee engagement and relationship-building. In 2023, a total of 90 employees took part in four separate Employee Participation Programmes (EPPs), held twice in Pulau Sibu and once each in Pulau Aur and Pulau Tinggi, Mersing, Johor. These EPPs allowed employees to not only foster their personal growth but also engage with local communities, share knowledge, and raise awareness about environmental issues. As a result of these efforts, 972 kg of trash was collected, and 13 island families were actively engaged in the process.Increase

These engagements aimed to raise environmental awareness and promote collaboration on key sustainability initiatives.
5UMT-MMS SEA TURTLE CONSERVATION INITIATIVEN/ABeach Clean-UpN/APublicThrough educational day trips to the research station and Kem Prihatin Penyu, SEATRU’s outreach programme continues to raise public awareness about sea turtles, benefiting both the general public and participating employees. In 2023, Marine Services expanded its volunteer programme, offering more opportunities for employees across the Group. A total of 38 employees participated in eight volunteer slots, marking an increase from previous years. Through this programme, participants gained valuable knowledge about sea turtles, their life cycle, and the importance of conservation efforts to protect their population.Increase
6Beach Clean-UpN/ABeach Clean-UpN/A200 participantsMHB organised a Beach Clean Up Day at the yard’s coastal area on 19 September 2023 in conjunction with the annual International Coastal Clean-up Day celebrated in September. This programme encouraged the employees to keep the surrounding areas clean and tidy at the same time to prevent waste from entering marine ecosystems. The programme saw the attendance of 200 participants.
7MHB River Rehabilitation ProgrammeN/A2,271 pieces of waste collected, 160 trees plantedN/A140 volunteersIn 2022, MHB launched its long-term River Rehabilitation Programme with the adoption of Sungai Buluh, Pasir Gudang in Johor, Malaysia. The programme is a collaboration with Majlis Bandaraya Pasir Gudang (MBPG) and UTM, held together with local communities within the Sungai Buluh vicinity. The MHB River Rehabilitation Programme aims to improve river health through ecological rehabilitation while raising local communities’ awareness through engagement and environmental education and ensuring sustainable development and improvement in their quality of life. In 2023, various activities were completed as part of the MHB River Rehabilitation Programme such as river plogging, water quality demonstrations, awareness of waste management and tree planting, among others. A total of 140 volunteers participated in these activities. From the waste management activity, a total of 2,271 pieces of waste were collected from the river and surrounding areas. The tree planting programme was conducted at the Laman Sungai Buluh with 160 trees successfully planted by the volunteers.
8Mangrove Conservation ProgrammeN/AN/AN/AEnvironmentALAM has embarked on the conservation of its mangrove forest that is part of ALAM’s land concession with the State Government of Melaka and this area is located 4.5 km away from the ALAM campus in the Kuala Linggi district. Building on this, ALAM has continued to protect the mangrove area from any human disturbance and in 2023, ALAM has improved the security of the mangrove area by installing a gate and signboard to prevent trespassing that may lead to disruption of the ecosystem and its biodiversity.
9Cadet SponsorshipRM29.60MN/AN/A829 cadetsA total of RM29.6 million was collectively sponsored for 829 cadets in 2023 to maintain their strong commitment in providing a highly skilled workforce to meet the demands of the international shipping industry and simultaneously provide employment to local youth. Out of the 829 cadets, 157 new Malaysian students were sponsored comprising 139 males and 18 females to further their studies in Diploma Nautical Studies and Diploma Marine Engineering in ALAM. In 2023, MISC continued their collaboration with the Texas A&M Foundation, awarding six scholarships to support undergraduate students majoring in Maritime Transportation and Marine Engineering at Texas A&M University at Galveston during their practical summer semester. Additionally, for the first time, AET partnered with Newcastle University in the UK to offer a scholarship for a one-year full-time Master of Science in Shipping and Logistics. 12Eco Walk 2023N/A328 kg of waste collectedN/AEnvironmentALAM in collaboration with its maintenance contractor and the local community had successfully organised ALAM Eco Walk 2023 with the objective of creating awareness of sustainability and 4R practices among ALAM’s employees, students, contractors and the local community. The programme took place at the beach along the ALAM coastline and the cemetery at the villages nearby the campus. This programmed successfully collected a total of 328 kg of waste where 231 kg was non-recyclable waste and 97 kg was recyclable waste.
13Eco River Cleaning N/A1,000 kg of waste collectedN/A83 students, 9 lecturersIn March 2023, a total of 83 students and nine lecturers from ALAM joined the Melaka State in organising a river-cleaning activity along the Melaka River. The programme successfully collected 1,000kg of trash. This programme aimed to elevate awareness among the students about illegal waste dumping in rivers and the importance of proper waste disposal to conserve the environment.
14Donation Drive for the Pasir Gudang Community RM0.02MN/AN/A55 familiesMHB continued to aid underprivileged residents in Pasir Gudang, Johor through a donation drive. Fifty-five families from three villages in Pasir Gudang were given grocery items amounted to RM150 as well as financial assistance of RM300 per family.
15MHB Back to SchoolN/ASchool uniformsN/AStudentsOn top of that, MHB’s Back to School programme was introduced where MHB provided school uniforms and supplies for school-going children. This programme enabled MHB to strengthen its relationships with various stakeholders, including government agencies, local communities, suppliers and investors.
16MHB Free MarketN/APre-loved itemsN/A125 familiesAs part of MHB’s effort to help the local communities of Pasir Gudang, MHB organised a Free Market event for more than 125 families across four villages in the area. Approximately f ive tonnes of new and pre-loved items were donated by MHB employees ranging from clothes, shoes, blankets, bags and many more. Grocery items were also distributed to 125 families who attended the event. MHB aimed to demonstrate the power of collaboration and a commitment to working closely with community stakeholders and not only business stakeholders.Decrease
17Donation Drive for the Homeless and Poor Urban Families N/APre-loved itemsN/AStudentsAs part of ALAM’s effort to help people in need, the Student Affairs Department organised a donation drive to collect food and drinks, clothes and toys where the collected items were distributed to homeless people and poor urban families. The distribution of goods was conducted in various locations in Kuala Lumpur City Centre, where the students of ALAM had the opportunity to interact and complete some fun activities with the children. This programme has helped to nurture good values among the students and encourage them to contribute to vulnerable communities.
18The Felix ProjectN/A4,000 cooked mealsN/ABeneficiariesAET continued their quarterly engagement with The Felix Project in London volunteering in Felix’s Kitchen, preparing over 4,000 cooked meals for beneficiaries. Another group of employees volunteered at the foodbank’s warehouse to help organise donated food, which was then distributed to individuals and charities facing food insecurity. 19Target Hunger, Houston, US N/AFood assistanceN/ABeneficiariesIn an effort to give back to the community, their AET colleagues in the US dedicated their time by volunteering at Target Hunger, a not-for-profit organisation providing food assistance to those in need in the Houston neighbourhood. During the volunteering, they assisted in packing fruits and vegetables which were then distributed to households in need. The volunteers also assisted in growing produce in the community garden.
20Sekolah Kebangsaan Sedili Kecil, Johor, Malaysia N/ASports equipment and stationeriesN/A30 studentsAET’s leaders traded suits for sneakers for a fun-filled afternoon engaging with over 30 primary students through games at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Sedili Kecil, in Johor, Malaysia. One of the most memorable activities was the “Wheel to Dream” bike-building challenge where teams transformed loose pieces into dream machines, which were then given to the needy students for their daily commute to school. Apart from spending time interacting with the students, AET also sponsored new sports equipment and stationeries to further enrich the students’ activities and learning.
21Keeperku Programme at Zoo Negara N/AFood preparation and cleaningN/AAnimalsIn October 2023, ALAM organised the Keeperku Programme at Zoo Negara with multiple activities conducted such as preparing food for animals and cleaning animal cages and common areas. Through this programme, MISC encouraged their students to contribute to society and learn about animal care.
22Singapore Children’s Society – Sunbeam Place N/ASupport Sunbeam PlaceN/A60 childrenAET continued to work with the Singapore Children’s Society supporting the residents and employees at the Sunbeam Place, a residential home and gazetted place of safety for up to 60 children aged between two and 21 who have been abused or neglected and are in need of protection, or for those whose parents are unable to provide proper care.
23Singapore Children’s Society – Sunbeam Place N/A870 itemsN/ABeneficiariesIn May, MISC organised a donation drive among their AET and Marine Services' colleagues and sponsored an upcycling workshop. Over 870 stationery, toiletries, household items and food items were donated by their employees, which the company matched. The upcycling workshop for residents and their 10 volunteers provided insights into the 4R approach towards responsible waste management and the concept of upcycling where participants had the opportunity to transform disused milk cartons into useful pouches.
24Singapore Children’s Society – Sunbeam Place N/A82 furnitureN/ASunbeam PlaceIn December, over 20 colleagues volunteered as part of an AET-sponsored refurbishment project aimed at improving the facilities at Sunbeam Place which also included the replacement of 82 bed frames, mattresses and other furniture. Some of the volunteers took on the task of transforming an existing storeroom into a study room and cleaned and organised the home’s ration room while the other volunteers brought residents and employees from Sunbeam Place to the movies for a much-needed break from their daily routine, bringing joy and smiles to their faces.
25Supporting Seafarers, Houston, USN/ABronze sponsorN/ABeneficiariesAET was a bronze sponsor of The Mission to Seafarer’s Flying Angel Campaign. Our contribution supported the Seafarers Centers Fund which is used to modernise and enhance green spaces at over 120 Flying Angel Centers worldwide – a dedicated space for seafarers during their limited time ashore. In addition, MISC continued their support of the Houston International Seafarers Center (HISC) as a table sponsor at their Annual Houston International Maritime Gala. The HISC provides humanitarian services to seafarers that visit Houston daily on commercial seagoing vessels and no-cost transportation for seafarers on liberty from their ships to the center and local area.
26Majlis Berbuka Puasa with Orphanage HomeN/AFood and new clothesN/AChildrenMHB continued its efforts in giving back to the community and the underprivileged children, whilst strengthening relationships with stakeholders by organising “Majlis Berbuka Puasa & Meraikan Anak-Anak Yatim Bersama Stakeholders” for the children from the orphanage of Rumah Kebajikan Ar Rayyan and Darul Hanan in Johor. The event was held in collaboration with the Management team of the orphanages to bring cheer to the children during the month of Ramadan. Apart from Berbuka Puasa (breaking fast), MHB also took the chance to distribute Raya packages with new clothes for the children.

MISC Berhad disbursed RM29.60 million through community investment, with 50% allocated towards environmental initiatives. This amount represents 1.39% of their cash-to-profit giving, which is an improvement than the community investment made in the prior year equivalent to 1.34%. Apart from allocating 50% of their giving to Environment through programs like Heart of the Ocean, UMT-MMS Sea Turtle Conservation Initiative and MHB River Rehabilitation Programme, 38.5% of their contributions also went towards Welfare and another 7.7% towards Sponsorship. Most of MISC’s givings are targeted towards Youth beneficiaries at 34.6% followed by the Environment making up 30.8% and Community at 23.1%. For instance, MISC’s Cadet and Maritime Sponsorships benefited 836 students. However, MISC did not specify the total employee volunteer hours for FY2023.
