Compare And Save More. This Free Tool Helps Malaysians Find Cheaper Essentials.

I feel like we’re in February 2020. The virus is just about to hit. We’re hearing all this news. Everything’s going on normally. But the next month, we are in a major crisis.

That was the warning from Nurhisham Hussein, Senior Director of Economy and Finance at the Prime Minister’s Office, during a recent interview with BFM.[1]

His comparison may sound dramatic, but the concerns are real. The ongoing conflict in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route through which around 20% of the world’s oil supply passes, has disrupted supply chains since early March 2026, and Malaysia is beginning to feel the effects.

Hussein alluded to the fact that Malaysian’s will probably feel the economic impact of this starting in June, and this extends far beyond fuel prices. Disruptions in the global supply chain affect everything from raw materials and manufacturing to transportation and the final price consumers pay at the checkout counter.

For many Malaysians, the effects are already noticeable. Meals outside are costing more, household essentials are getting pricier, and travel expenses such as flights, accommodation, and transportation continue to rise.

According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the nation’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 136.9 compared to 134.3 the previous year. Inflation also recorded its highest reading in 18 months, increasing from 1.7% in March to 1.9% in April.[2]

In a climate like this, every ringgit matters. Knowing where to find the best prices can help families stretch their budgets further and make smarter purchasing decisions.

What Is Price Tracker Malaysia?

Price Tracker Malaysia is a free tool by Wiki Impact that monitors the prices of essential goods across 8 major supermarkets in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak.

Updated every Monday by noon, the platform allows users to compare prices on commonly purchased items, including rice, cooking oil, chicken, vegetables, and household essentials.

We’re entering uncharted territory. The small decisions, such as where you buy rice, which store has cheaper cooking oil, can add up to meaningful savings. We hope this helps Malaysians make better decisions about where to spend their hard-earned money. Terence Ooi, Co-Founder of Wiki Impact.

What makes the tool especially useful is its independence. Wiki Impact does not accept payments from supermarkets to influence pricing data. All prices are sourced from publicly available information on supermarket websites and consolidated into a single platform for easy comparison.

We are actively working to expand our coverage of outlets and products. In the future, we also hope to provide deeper analysis and insights on pricing trends. Terence Ooi, Co-Founder of Wiki Impact.

How to Use Price Tracker

  • Check Every Monday After Noon: Prices are updated weekly by 12 pm. Checking the platform regularly can help you plan your grocery shopping more strategically.
  • Filter by Region: Prices can vary significantly between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak, so filtering by region ensures you are comparing prices available in your area.
  • Compare Week-to-Week Trends: Use the “This Week” and “Last Week” comparison feature to track price changes and identify trends. This may help you decide whether to buy now or wait.
  • Focus on High-Impact Essentials: Saving RM2 or RM3 on staples such as rice, cooking oil, or eggs each week can make a meaningful difference over time.
  • Plan Smarter Grocery Trips: Comparing prices across supermarkets can help you identify which store offers the best overall value for your shopping list. In some cases, travelling slightly further may result in greater savings.
  • Use It While Shopping: The platform is mobile-friendly, allowing users to compare prices on the go by tapping “Show all stores” while shopping.

While Malaysians may not be able to control rising global costs, they can still take practical steps to manage everyday expenses more effectively. Visit Price Tracker Malaysia to start comparing prices.
