Is poverty measured solely based on an individual’s wealth? Yes and no. Whilst wealth is one barometer, other factors such as standard of living, basic amenities and education needs to be considered.
The multidimensional poverty index (MPI) is an international measure that assesses poverty by ten different indicators. This includes a person’s health (nutrition and child mortality), education (Years of schooling and school attendance) and standard of living (cooking fuel, sanitation, drinking water, electricity, housing and assets).
