Looking for a motivated and community-oriented individual to join our team in Mersing, Johor, as a Field Liason Officer. Working closely with local fishing communities and stakeholders to support marine mammal conservation, community engagement, and field activities under our Dugong Research & Conservation (DRC) Project.
Responsibilities
1. Build and maintain relationships with fishing communities and local stakeholders in Mersing, Johor, to support communication, collaboration, and data collection.
2. Conduct interviews and engage fishers in MareCet’s marine mammal bycatch mitigation programme.
3. Coordinate and support field activities, including pinger observation surveys, fish catch yield surveys, and other marine mammal research and conservation initiatives.
4. Lead and support community engagement activities, including a youth initiative, while serving as MareCet’s key local contact in Mersing.
Requirements
1. Malaysian citizen with a valid driver’s licence.
2. Degree in Social Science, Anthropology, Marine Science, Environmental Science, or a related field is preferred.
3. Experience in community engagement, stakeholder engagement, or field-based scientific work is highly desirable.
4. Fluent in Bahasa Melayu and able to communicate effectively with local fishers. Familiarity with the culture and community dynamics of Mersing/Johor is an advantage.
5. Organised, self-motivated, disciplined, resourceful, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
6. Willing to travel and work on weekends or public holidays when required.
