Every family carries stories worth remembering — of migration, work, love, tradition, resilience and everyday life. Stories that are passed down through conversation, but rarely recorded.
Asking Our Ancestors is a workshop that explores oral history through documentary filmmaking. Participants will learn how to interview an elder from their family or community and shape those memories into a 5-minute documentary portrait.
No filmmaking experience is required. Use the phone or camera you already have, edit with the software you're most comfortable with, and create something that can be shared with your family for generations to come.
The workshop is open to everyone. Applications are especially encouraged from those interested in documenting plantation histories and the lived experiences of plantation communities, though this is not a requirement.
