SPECIFIC KNOWLDEGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
• Preferably a peer (member of the key population targeted for outreach)
• Outgoing & open-minded personality with excellent social and interpersonal communication skills.
• Some social media skills with a creative approach (existing following is an added advantage)
• Personal and/or professional experience related basic counseling.
• Basic understanding about HIV
• Ability to work independently but cooperatively with others in a team.
• Be highly organized committed and well-motivated
• High level of integrity, compassion for others and honesty.
CORE COMPETENCIES
The HIV outreach team provides HIV prevention education about condom use, harm reduction, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), promotes HIV counseling and testing services and services to test for and treat sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and Hepatitis B and C for people at risk for HIV. HIV outreach workers are tasked to find new clients from populations at high risk for HIV, to create awareness about HIV and how it is transmitted, and promote HIV testing and treatment services, as well as STI and Hepatitis B and C testing and treatment services.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
HIV outreach
- Actively trying to find new clients for HIV services in places (physical locations "offline/site" or in virtual/internet "online/cyber") where there are many potential clients.
- Provide accurate and appropriate information & education to increase knowledge and awareness about HIV, STIs and related issues.
- Distribute HIV prevention materials such as condoms, lubricants and new syringes. (also, information on PrEP).
- Convince key population members of the benefits of access to HIV counseling and testing services, especially those who do not know their status in order to connect them with these services for new case detection of HIV infection
- Refer or accompany the client to HIV counseling and testing services by a counselor/nurse/doctor/medical officer who will continue to care for the client if diagnosed positive.
- Trained and prepared to do "community-based testing (CBT)", including doing pre-counseling and post counseling for HIV testing"
- Constantly learning new knowledge about HIV by sharing knowledge with Community Health Workers and other team members.
Always make documentation and reports of all work efforts.
Carry out any other duties as may be directed by the Executive Director of Malaysian AIDS Foundation to further the aims of MAF.
