The Women’s Tribunal Malaysia celebrates rural women in all their power on this International Day of Rural Women! #RuralWomensDay #RuralWomen
This year’s theme is Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All. Rural women play a key role in ensuring food security, promoting agricultural and rural development, and combatting climate change. According to the Food First Information and Action Network (FIAN), rural women account for roughly 50% of the world’s food production. However, rural women account for 70% of the world’s hungry and face discrimination in accessing land ownership.
The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely impacted rural women by disrupting agricultural food chains, decreasing income and livelihoods, worsen the lack of access to information and technology, and exacerbate the existing lack of access to resources such as food, water and healthcare.
Locally, SUHAKAM reported that many rural women still do not own bank accounts, tech devices or have access to internet services. Due to this digital divide, they do not have equal access and opportunities nor even know about the Government’s short-term assistance such as Bantuan Prihatin Nasional and Pelan PENJANA. There is also a shortage of temporary shelters for survivors of domestic violence in rural areas
