Some 200 families in five villages (Kampung Boribi Kanibongan, Kampung Gunsali, Kampung Mapad Kanibongan, Kampung Ranggal and Kampung Mangkapon Darat) in Sabah are now enjoying clean and regular water supply following the installation of water supply systems under Program Memampankan Ekonomi Asas Rakyat (MEKAR), an initiative under our community well-being and development focus area.
The 18-month project involved the provision of a clean water supply system that is easy to access, and simple to operate under safer conditions. The supply of water utilises a gravity-fed system as well as solar-powered water pumps, and also comprise water catchments, pipes, pump houses, water filters, main storage tanks, and collection points.
To signify the completion of this project, a handover ceremony was recently held at Kampung Mangkapon Darat. The handover ceremony also included a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activity with students from the villages, led by four Program Duta Guru (PDG) teachers to further cultivate interest in STEM among the students. During the session, the students learnt to assemble race cars and was given the opportunity to showcase their creativity and learnings in a race car competition.
It is hoped that the local communities will be able to enjoy a consistent supply of clean water especially during dry season and that the communities will work together in their collective effort to maintain the functionality of the water supply system.
