Meet Mr. Kalaivanan, the passionate and dedicated President and Founder of Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM). With over a decade of experience as an independent stray animal rescuer and feeder, Kalai has committed his life to ending animal cruelty and improving the welfare of animals in Malaysia.
Kalaivanan’s journey began when he was appointed as the Head of EXCO for Persatuan Haiwan Malaysia, focusing on handling animal cruelty cases. In the midst of the 2019 COVID-19 pandemic, Kalai recognized the dire situation faced by stray animals due to lockdowns and food scarcity. This led to the creation of SAFM, an organisation dedicated to raising awareness and building an active volunteer network for stray feeding. Under his leadership, SAFM quickly gained recognition for their efforts in combating animal cruelty and promoting animal welfare in Malaysia. In 2019, SAFM formalised their status as a non-governmental organisation (NGO).
Since 2019, Kalai has been tirelessly advocating against animal cruelty in Malaysia. His powerful voice for voiceless animals has made a significant impact, drawing media attention and support for justice in animal cruelty cases. Him and SAFM’s relentless efforts are featured in news articles almost every month.
As the president of SAFM, Kalai has orchestrated numerous impactful programs throughout Peninsula Malaysia. He established five food banks in the Klang Valley and donated essential animal food during the pandemic. In times of crisis, such as floods in Selangor, Pahang, Terengganu and Johor , he has led rescue missions to save stranded stray animals and provided aid to pet owners in need, ensuring they have access to pet food.
In recognition of his outstanding dedication, Mr. Kalaivanan received an award from the APJ Abdul Kalam People Welfare Organization and earned the title of “Hero Pandemik.” His unwavering commitment to animal welfare continues to inspire change and make a difference in the lives of animals across Malaysia.
Making an impact in Malaysia is a steadfast commitment to enhancing the well-being of animals in the country. It involves actively striving to eliminate animal cruelty, elevate their welfare, and foster greater awareness within the country. Impact is defined by the tangible improvements in the lives of animals and the acknowledgement by local communities and organisations.
